  1. Results of the Inner City Division final of the Humorous Speech contest

    Dentists at Toastmasters!

No not a free dental check-up!

    Nor a Dental Practionor’s Convention!

You guessed right! Toastmasters Speech contests!

At the Inner City Division final of the Humorous Speech contest in Perth last week there were chattering teeth and moulded masterpieces on display as the contestants took the audience on a deliriously funny diatribe of humorous speeches.

Four individual and original speeches that by chance painted word pictures and images of the dreaded ‘dentist’, and the fear that it evokes for many.   Even Mona Lisa was present to witness the event, that famous smile complete with casted dentures!

Contestants in their topics reminded us that time waits for no-one but waiting at the dentist seems to take for hours, the exclamation shopping with the ‘wife’ worse than a trip to the dentist captured attention;  and the theatrics of life kept the audience laughing and entertained throughout.

Congratulations to the winner Thierry Morel who will represent the Division at the District 73 final in Perth, in May 2011.  I hope Thierry has a dental check-up prior to ensure he is remembered for his brilliant toothy smile.

Young Guns was ably represented by Jeremiah Hartmann who did us proud and was unlucky not to achieve a podium finish. Well done!

Table Topics and the road more or less travelled.

Impromptu speaking with contestants leading the audience  a journey of life as they shared wisdom, insight and the bumps and breakdowns that many in the audience related to in someway.

First place getter David Cain goes onto represent the Division at the District final in Perth in May 2011.

Again Young Guns was well represented by Greg Madden who did a sterling job and held his own in an extremely high standard of responses. Congratulations!

Overview

Where and When?

Young Guns Toastmasters meets every second Tuesday evening at 6.15pm. If you click on the ‘Schedule’ link, you can check out the dates of our next few meetings.

Meetings typically run for about 60-75 minutes, depending on the number of scheduled speakers. The venue is in the Comedy Room, upstairs in the Brisbane Hotel (on the corner of Beaufort Street and Brisbane Street, in Highgate.

There is paid parking behind the Brisbane Hotel.

What sort of people attend?

Toastmasters is ideal for anybody who gets nervous in front of an audience, wants a little self-confidence boost or is keen to improve their leadership skills.

Young Guns is full of people from all walks of life, with quite a few members who work in the city. There are no restrictions as to who can join - if you think you’ll fit in, no doubt you will.

Our club has around twenty members at the moment, with a healthy balance of experienced and newer members.

What should I expect?

Our meetings follow a fairly consistent format each week. For instance, a typical meeting might run:

18:15 Welcome (by the Toastmaster of the day)
18:20 ‘Inspiration’ (a 2 minute warm-up speech)
18:25 Table Topics (4-5 members are each called on to deliver a brief, unprepared speech in response to a question)
18:35 Evaluation of the impromptu speakers
18:50 Three or four prepared speeches
19:10 Feedback about the prepared speeches
19:20 Joke or Word of the Day
19:25 General Evaluation (feedback about the other speeches/roles)
19:30 Finish!

While we aim to stick to the agenda, meetings do tend to be pretty social. There’s a good sense of fun and a positive environment. Members often stay back after the meeting for a drink and a chat.

Sounds Interesting … What now?

Guests are always welcome to attend a few meetings, without charge, while they get a feel for what happens and how everything works. As a guest, you won’t be asked to participate in any of the meeting roles (unless you’d like to). Once you’ve attended a few meetings, you can decide whether or not the club suits you.

There’s a few clubs around Perth, so it might be worth trying more than one to see which most suits your personality.
